Power

PURPOSE:
To expose the student to new equipment and lab procedures. And to observe the Force, Work and Power generated by a subject.

INTRODUCTION:
The amount of force generated by the mass of a subject here on the surface of the earth is: F = m x gravity. If this Force is displaced over a distance the Work generated is: Work = Force x displacement. If this Work is carried out during a set time, the Power generated is: Power = Work / time. During this lab you will observe a subject climb a set of stairs and calculate the Force, Work and Power generated by the subject.

If you get into trouble and perform some procedure that causes the lab to fail(lab equipment will no longer operate), you can press the "Reset" button and the simulation will return to the starting position.

PROCEDURE:

1) You can adjust the background shading by clicking on the "Special" button to the right and selecting "Background". Click on the "Special" button and select "Print Blank Report" to obtain a web page that can be printed and used as a lab report. (the program will not be interrupted)

2) Click the black button on the tape measure laying on the floor(the button should turn red). Drag the tape upwards until it is above the top stair. Click on the red button to lock the tape and this will allow you to move it. Record the distance from the main floor up to the floor above the top stair (the tape measure measures in meters).

3) Turn on the timer monitor by clicking on the On/Off button(use the close-up it's easier). A photogate is positioned at the base of the stairs and on the top step. When the subject passes the first gate the timer will activate and start to count the passage of time. Once the top gate has been passed, the total time taken to climb the stairs will be displayed.

4) Press the "Go" button to urge the subject to climb the stairs. Record the time taken.

5) Press "go" again and the subject will step up on the bathroom scale. Record their mass in kg.

6) Calculate the requested values asked for on the lab sheet and any given by your teacher. For help on these values click on the "Special" button and select "View Data & Hints". Select "File Report" to send a copy to be viewed by your teacher.
