PURPOSE:
To give the student experience in data gathering and calculations based on actual amusement ride physics.

INTRODUCTION:
The "Swing" is a very old ride found at many amusement parks. It consists of a central pole with extended arms from which riders are sitting in a swing like chair. The whole ride then rotates swinging the riders outward.

PROCEDURE:

1) You can adjust the background shading by clicking on the "Special" button to the right and selecting "Background". Click on the "Special" button and select "Print Blank Report" to obtain a web page that can be printed and used as a lab report. (the program will not be interrupted)

2) Turn the ride on and allow it to get up to speed. Click on the "pace" button and count how many paces across the radius of the ride to the center of the rider that has extended outwards (estimate if between two paces). Record this value and the value for one pace for this student. Also record the mass of the rider.

3) While the ride is running, record the angle that the chair and chain display in the box to the right.

4) Calculate the requested values asked for on the lab sheet and any given by your teacher. For help on these values click on the "Special" button and select "View Data & Hints". Select "File Report" to send a copy to be viewed by your teacher.
